*unlurks for a while*
General
Name: Declan Casey
Age: 24
Ethnicity: Caucasian
Eye Colour: Hazel
Hair Colour: Sandy blond
Occupation: He takes whatever come his way, be it bartending, manual labour or office work.
Personality
Sports/Hobbies: A bona fide sports fan, Declan will try his hand at any team game - but his favourites are football and rugby. He also swims and used to run cross-country. He has a strong creative side and likes to sketch, though his forte is structures and buildings, rather than nature or people. Although too active to enjoy most passive activities other than drawing, he does like a good crime thriller or horror movie after a long day.
Likes: Like any young man, Declan enjoys a night out on the tiles with his friends. Sadly due to his current skintness (and the fact that the bulk of his acquaintances are overseas), he hasn't been in able to do this in a long time. He loves to be active, to be doing something at all times: idleness unsettles him. He enjoys food and packs away a lot of it. He also likes having a speedy metabolism, letting him eat what he wants without consequence.
Dislikes: Declan cannot stand his freckles which, although not very obvious, are present all the same. He has an instant dislike for politicians and their double standards. Two-facedness is not a quality he values in anyone. His greatest phobia is of spiders. He doesn't mind seeing them, but the thought of ever having to touch one keeps him awake at night. As a matter of male pride, he has vowed never to tell anyone, but dreads the day that this fear might ever become known.
Background story: Declan is less than satisfied with his lot in life. Hailing from a middle-class family living in a rural village, he grew up with three brothers; the only feminine influence in his life was his mother. As a result, although well used to rough-housing, Declan finds females to be a constant source of puzzlement. Though the schools he attended were mixed, even having dated casually through his late teens and early twenties, girls are still a bit of a mystery to him.
After spending five years in college toiling away at an architecture degree, Declan emerged with his qualification only to find the country in the grip of an economic recession. Even guys who had been in the business for twenty years couldn't find work. With no opportunities on the horizon, he ended up doing whatever work he could find, being paid a pittance for it and gradually becoming more and more embittered. His dreams of starting his own architecture firm had gone up in smoke and after several tough years studying, he was now scrubbing tables in McDonalds for the minimum wage. Needless to say, Declan's a little angry at the world.
After watching several of his friends emigrating to America, Asia and Australia in search of a better deal in life, Declan found himself following suit... although his destination wasn't quite so exotic or far flung. Landing in Lake Owensway six months ago, he settled in quickly, finding a cheap place to rent and getting hired in a local restaurant within a week. His life is far from perfect - and he's slightly alarmed to find it's not too different from what he left behind - but the change in scenery helps and the work, though not any better than what he was doing at home, is at least plentiful thanks to the onslaught of tourists.
Personality: Declan's not particularly approachable. Gruff and indifferent are the words most people would come up with, when trying to describe him. It's a preconception he encourages, as for all the interaction he has with people through his work and his hobbies, Declan is a very private person. He's not comfortable discussing his thoughts and feelings, even with close friends. That said, although it takes him some time to thaw out, he can be a good companion, if a little withdrawn. He comes out of his shell on the playing field and is good at co-operation both on and off it. He is naturally a little disillusioned with himself at the moment, wondering what is the point when all he can see is a life of menial work and just barely managing to get by ahead of him. However Declan is far too practical to consider any dramatic exit from his banal existence. He thinks about returning home occasionally, but knows that he will be facing into the exact same predicament there. Instead, Declan simply plans to work hard, save as much as he can and blindly hope that things will improve, somehow.
