2012?

Okay, so I'm hoping this topic isn't offensive to anyone. But I am really curious. How many people believe the world is going to end in 2012? I've seen some people on the BBS who hint that this is what they believe, but there's not a place to discuss it there. My personal opinion is that it probably won't. I guess the calender (you can tell how little I've actually looked into this) has to end at some point. Also, I'm a little bit of a history nerd. Best subject ever. So I tend to take things that happened or started way back when with a pinch of salt (if you studied the history of medicine you may well be with me in this mindset - if they still followed those beliefs hospital would truly be terrifying). Anyway, I hope it doesn't happen. I'm planning my life around it not happening so it would be a little... inconvenient. But I do want to hear what everyone else thinks and why. I think its healthy for people with different views and beliefs and who are from different cultures to mix and share

*cough cough* Why would the world end? That calendar was from the Mayans that died offf (ummmmmm googles it) 250 AD and they made a LONGGGGG *** calendar, and I'm sure if they were still alive they would renew it. Just like any other year. I doubt it will happen. People thought the world was going to end in 2000. It didn't. There will always be nuts like that.
^^^My rant. If it does happen, how ironic.

Your rant, Cayla, made me think of my elderly neighbors, who had gone and bought a generator back for the whole Y2K thing, and never even ended up opening it until this year, eleven years later, when we lost power for two separate weeks in August and November. It just goes to show what hysteria and panic can make people do.
In my world class (yes, history really is the best subject), my teacher mentioned something on this topic, which made me think that somebody had come out with legitimate news saying that 2012 wasn't going to happen, but I may have interpreted what he was saying wrong. I'll ask him tomorrow, because now I'm genuinely curious.
I personally don't think it will happen. But I'm a very skeptical person in general. I don't actually have a reason why I think this.

Ha, Cayla, that is sort of my view too. I don't see that there's reason for it. Like I said, the calender had to end at some point. I also know someone who knows how the whole thing is supposed to go down, and it doesn't sound particularly plausible. I respect people who do think this is the case, I just personally am more of a 'I'll believe it when I see it' person :]

I don't believe the world is going to end either. Like you all said the calendar had to end at some point! Also I don't understand how the world can possibly just end, just like that, boom gone! Sounds a bit daft to me. Maybe the Mayans just ended the calendar there for lol's! Maybe they thought it would be a good prank Probably not, but that would be funny if they did. I also love History, it was my favourite subject at school and its the subject I did the best in I also found this picture a while ago and it made me chuckle so thought I would share it.

Funny picture Kate! I don't belive it will happen. When the rumors started circulating, (I was, what 11?) I found myself very paranoid. The calender ends every year, that doesn't mean the world ends. I think they made up the theory to promote the movie 2012. My friends think that because of all the natural disasters happening, that we're all going to die. (I'm not trying to offend anyone who's non-religious.) My science teacher said the only one who knows when the world is going to end is the Guy Upstairs. So that's what I think about it.

I don't believe it. At all. I mean, how many times in the past decade has someone said that the world was going to end? 4, 5 times? And we're all still here... And that was my theory too; that maybe the Mayans just disappeared before they were able to finish the whole calendar system. I think they did disappear randomly and no one can figure out why. xXTotallySimsXx, I like your idea about them creating the theory so they can sell the movie 2012. I just sounds like something they'd do. Ha, this thread just reminded me about our senior shirt. I'm graduating from high school this year and our senior shirt is going to say something like "2012: The world isn't ending, we're just taking over." I love it. ;D Oh well, if it does it does, if it doesn't it doesn't. Nothing anyone can do to stop it (well, unless you're one of those people who bought an underground bunker for the apocolypse ). All I know is it makes a pretty awesome shirt.

I more or less agree with all of your views. The Mayans probably thought, 'Ok, we've gotten up as far as 2011 - we'll do 2012 and the rest a bit closer to the time.'

I really agree with most of what's been said so far. I think I could really sum up my feelings in one simple quote.
*It's lunchtime* My friend: "Hey, do you know that the world's meant to end next year?!" Me: "Naaaaaah." *continues eating*
It's very scientific, my view. Also; 2012 was one of the weirdest films I think I've ever seen; I laughed all the way through.

I don't think it will end, but if it were going to, it sorta freaks me out o__O But, I'm not the type to believe in that stuff, I think I'm like Amy, I'm sort of an 'I'll believe it when I see it' person.

I swear it was supposed to be the 21st or something, and then it changed to the 12 so it could be 12/12/12... But yeah Simey, I agree with you.

Loved the comic Kate! And it would make sense to make the idea more "public" to get people to watch an overrated movie.
